Android Engineer

LINE was conceived as a mobile messaging service shortly after the massive earthquake that devastated Japan on March 11, 2011. After the tragedy, it became apparent that there was a fundamental need for a global communication tool that could strengthen human relationships. Just a few months later in June, we launched the LINE messaging app. With this approach, LINE has grown into a social platform with hundreds of millions users worldwide, having a particularly strong focus in the rapidly advancing continent of Asia. LINE Fukuoka Corporation was fully funded by LINE Corporation and established in 2013. Since the beginning, we have worked together with LINE Corporation to rapidly develop our business so that we can continue to grow the LINE brand. Additionally, we want to make use of certain advantages that we enjoy due to our location in Fukuoka, those being our points of contact with users of LINE and our close proximity to the users, in order to contribute work of value including but not limited to improving usability and coming up with new projects for the city. It has been the mission of LINE to bring a "wow" factor to everything we do, in which users are pleasantly surprised with things that exceed their expectations. This concept of "wow" is a core value of LINE Fukuoka as well, and we constantly try various new business projects in the spirit of taking on new challenges.

You will be involved with the development of, and operational work for, the LINE client and LINE Family App clients. We will assign the project to you after inquiring about your experience as an engineer and future career preferences.

・ Development of sticker/theme/emoji features in the LINE app.
・ Development of LINE Family Apps (e.g. “LINE Creators Studio”).

【Specifics of Job Description】
・ Collaborating with the Planning and Design teams to bring ideas to life (e.g. through coding, creating unit tests, etc.).
・ Performing app profiling and improving performance.
・ Improving and maintaining a CI environment that supports stable development.
・ Improving code quality through code reviews.
・ UI/UX improvement.

【Technology we use】
Kotlin, Java, Gradle, Kotlin coroutine, RxJava2, Thrift, etc.

【No Language Skills Required】
This position requires no prior Japanese language skills. We have a robust English support team and there are many English-speaking employees. Successful applicants without Japanese language skills will be required to attend a Japanese language course for at least the first three months to one year after joining LINE Fukuoka. The language course is sponsored by LINE and is an excellent opportunity to acquire the language.

【Required Skills】
・ Experienced in Android native application development using Kotlin.
・ Experience working in Android native applications (3+ years).
・ Basic knowledge in computer science (e.g. algorithm, data structure, asynchronous I/O, network).
・ Work experience using version control systems (VCS), dependency management systems, and continuous-integration systems (CI).
・ Communication ability in Japanese or English.
・ Motivation to learn Japanese.

【Preferred Skills】
・ Experienced in Android native application development using Java.
・ Web/Native hybrid applications.
・ UI/UX design and implementation (e.g. custom views and interactions).
・ Experience in the coaching, management and/or leadership of a technical team.
・ Open-source software development experience and/or participation in open source communities is also a plus.
・ Strong interest and ability to learn any new technical topic.
